We are a collective embodiment of the universal message of Al-Islam, guided by the teachings of Imam W.D. Mohammed. Our belief is simple yet profound: there is but one God, and we are all interconnected as one human family.
Masjid Freehaven's roots trace back to a humble beginning, founded by 12 Muslim families whose bonds strengthened through shared Iftars and Eids in the Lawnside area. These gatherings evolved into discussions about the need for a dedicated space for worship and community growth. Initially meeting in homes, schools, and businesses, our journey led us to acquire a property that would become the cherished home of Masjid Freehaven.
Over nine years of perseverance, our dedicated brothers and sisters transformed a former nursing home and church into Masjid Freehaven. Our name pays homage to the historical significance of the African-American community, once known as Freehaven and a sanctuary for the Underground Railroad. As the building underwent renovations, our community flourished, organizing into an Ummah, establishing a Shura board, and selecting a resident Imam.
On May 16th, 1999, after years of dedication, Masjid Freehaven officially opened its doors. The grand opening was graced by the esteemed presence of the late Imam WD Mohammed, alongside local dignitaries and fellow Muslims.
